Partisanship Reshaping Trust in Federal Institutions

September 04, 2025

A recent Pew Research Center poll found that aside from the National Park Service, National Weather Service, and USPS, Americans are divided on trust in federal institutions, split along partisan lines on most departments, particularly when it comes to ICE, DOJ, and IRS.

By The Numbers:

  • Seventy-six percent of Americans have a favorable view of the National Park Service, including 78% of Republicans and 79% of Democrats.

  • Seventy-six percent of Americans have a favorable view of the National Weather Service, including 75% of Republicans and 81% of Democrats.

  • Republicans are more likely to view ICE (72%), DHS (68%), DOJ (51%), State Department (57%), FBI (54%), and HHS (51%) more favorably than Democrats.

The Bottom Line: While apolitical agencies like the National Park Service retain high ratings with both parties, other agencies including ICE and DHS have shifted along  partisan lines. It has yet to be seen how these sentiments translate into policy support, but they should be monitored as the Administration continues to roll out initiatives, especially related to DOJ and FBI.
