‘Bidenflation’ Label Persists

August 24, 2023

The numbers are in and ‘Bidenomics’ has fallen flat, even among Democrats. New polling from the Associated Press and NORC at the University of Chicago finds that despite a slight uptick in economic recovery during President Biden’s third year in office, his numbers on the economy lags far behind his overall approval rating.

Why It Matters: The economy is one of the largest chinks in the armor of a Biden re-election. His failure to take immediate, meaningful action while Republicans pushed hard on the conditions of the Biden economy over the last almost 3 years has taken its toll.

By The Numbers:

  • 42% of Americans approve of Biden’s overall job performance, while only 36% approve of his handling of the economy.
  • An 11-point gap exists among Democrats between his overall performance and his economic leadership, which only 65% of Democrats approve of.
  • Only 82% of Democrats say they would definitely or probably support the President if he wins his party’s nomination; a majority of 55% of Democrats don’t want him to run in 2024.

Failure to Brand: Attempts to claim success on the economic issue because of “Bidenomics” was far less effective as aspiring West Wing Biden aides hoped, but the GOP labeling higher food and gas prices as “Bidenflation” seems to be front of mind for many voters. That could pose a major problem for the President, especially if the GOP nominee can effectively message on economic growth and prosperity.

The Bottom Line: Even within his own party President Biden is widely viewed as weak on the economy. While the GOP hopefuls continue jockeying, national Republicans should focus on keeping the heat on Biden’s poor economic performance with a frequency and variety such that the message is reinforced and doesn’t become stale by the time the Republican Party has chosen its nominee.
