Trump Shoulders Blame for DC Riot

January 14, 2021

Fifty-two percent of voters say Trump deserves “a great deal” of blame, 15% say he deserves “a good amount,” and only 15% say he deserves no blame “at all” according to ABC News/Ipsos poll.

When Quinnipiac asked a similar question, 56% of voters said they hold Mr. Trump responsible for the storming of the Capitol, while 42% said they do not. That 56% includes 17% of Republicans, 58% of Independents, 64% of women, 46% of white non-college educated voters, 64% of Hispanic voters and 57% of voters over 65 years old. He is viewed as being responsible by almost every demographic group.

Mr. Trump finally issued a statement this week encouraging his supporters not to invoke violence leading up to Joe Biden’s inauguration, but this may be too little too late.  Many Americans who voted for Mr. Trump were rightly sickened by the violent, attack on our Capitol and, according to these polls, say he shoulders much of the blame.  He has a very small window to do the right thing and thereby preserve some of his reputation next week and attend Mr. Biden’s inauguration.
